Michele Corcella is graduated in Musical Studies at the University of Bologna, defending a thesis on Duke Ellington’s soundtracks. He also graduated in Jazz Music, as well as Ar-rangement and Composition for Multimedia Music, at the Conservatory of Bologna. He also studied orchestral conducting at the Accademia Pianistica in Imola.
He won several prizes in international composition competitions such as “Eddie Lang 2009″, “2 Agosto” 2009, “Jazzverk” 2010, “Bargajazz” 2012, “Scrivere in Jazz” 2014, “Siae Libera il Jazz”, “European Jazz Composers Competitions”.
He has been working as a composer, arranger or conductor for Kenny Wheeler, John Tay-lor, David Liebman, Norma Winstone, Anders Jormin, Glauco Venier, Enrico Pieranunzi, Diana Torto, Daniele Scannapieco, Alfonso Deidda, Rosario Giuliani, Gianluigi Trovesi, Maurizio Giammarco, Maria Pia De Vito, WDR Big Band, Mario Brunello, Altenberg Trio Wien, Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna and Camerata Strumentale Città di Pra-to.
He was one of the speaker at the last two editions of the “Duke Ellington International Con-ference” which took place in Amsterdam (2014) and New York (2016). He also presented a paper about Duke Ellington scoring for the saxophone section at the International Jazz Composers Symposium 2017 in Tampa (Florida). He’s currently teaching jazz composition at the “G.B. Martini” Conservatory in Bologna and “Adriano Buzzolla” Conservatory in Adria (Italy).
