1995 Edition

The very first edition of International Composing Competition "2 Agosto"

The first edition of International Composition Competition “2 Agosto” takes place in Bologna in 1995.

This initiative is promoted by the Association of Families of the Victims of the Bologna Station Massacre of August 2, 1980, the Municipality of Bologna, the Solidarity Committee for the Victims of Massacres, and the Teatro Comunale di Bologna.

The competition aims to commemorate the victims of the terrorist attack that occurred at the Bologna railway station on August 2, 1980, using music as an expressive form for memory and reflection

Competition Announcement

  • The competition is open to musicians of any nationality.
  • Participants must not have reached 30 years of age by the application deadline.
  • Compositions must be for orchestra.
  • The required duration for the compositions is not more than 15 minutes and not less than 9 minutes.
  • Selected scores are to be performed in a concert in Piazza Maggiore in Bologna on August 1, 1995, during the events commemorating the victims of the massacre.
  • The required orchestral forces include: two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, two trombones, strings, and percussion. The use of the organ is possible, but scores should preferably be for chamber ensembles for initial consideration. Parts for piano, electric keyboard, electric bass, and specific percussion are allowed only if already included in the full score for the final phase.
  • Three cash prizes are awarded:
    First prize: 10,000,000 Lire.
    Second prize: 5,000,000 Lire.
    Third prize: 3,000,000 Lire.

A Special Mention from the Jury is awarded to Paolo Baioni for the composition “Un elenco di nomi”.

The Final Concert

The winning and mentioned compositions are performed on July 31, 1995, in Piazza Maggiore by the Orchestra da Camera di Bologna, conducted by Arturo Tamayo, with Cristiano Rossi as violin soloist and Marco Pavin as guitar soloist.
